One thing a lot of small businesses do with their marketing is jumping straight from a problem to a tactic.

“We need more leads.” = okay, let’s start posting more.

“Our email list is small.” = let’s make a lead magnet.

Maybe.

But I’d rather understand what’s actually happening first.

Think about it like this - If 1,000 people are reaching your website and hardly anyone is enquiring, getting another 1,000 people there isn't going to make much difference.

If people are downloading your lead magnet but never moivng to your paid offer, another lead magnet probably isn’t the answer either.

And if most of your work comes through referrals, the issue might be that the rest of your marketing doesn’t give those people a clear route towards working with you.

The tactic comes after the diagnosis.

That could mean creating something new.

It could also mean improving something you already have, connecting two things properly, changing the next step or removing something that’s adding unnecessary friction.

There isn’t one marketing setup every business should have.

There’s the setup that makes sense for your business, your offer and the way your customers actually buy.

So before you add another thing to your marketing, ask:

What problem is this actually meant to solve?

If you’re not sure where your customer journey is breaking down, start with my free Funnel Diagnostic.

It’ll help you spot where people may be dropping off, getting stuck or failing to move to the next step.

Well, this wasn’t on my to-do list this week. 🙃

I’ve spent hours dealing with the aftermath of hackers gaining access to my own website. It’s still offline while I work through the damage.

And this week, the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre issued an urgent warning about serious security vulnerabilities affecting PHP, the technology that powers WordPress websites.

If you have a WordPress website, please don’t ignore this.

You don’t need to understand PHP or know how to code. But you do need to know whether your website is running an affected version and what to do if it is.

I’ve broken it down in this carousel, including how to check your version, what to do next and how to look for signs that your website may already have been compromised.

And a reminder: just because your website looks fine doesn’t necessarily mean it’s secure.

I’ve learned that one the hard way this week.

Save this, check your website and send it to another business owner who needs to see it.

I’ve worked behind the scenes of 30+ businesses, from start-ups finding their feet to established six and seven-figure businesses.

And I’ve seen a LOT.

The systems that make running a business easier. The marketing strategies that actually bring in sales. And the messy behind-the-scenes stuff that nobody really talks about on Instagram.

I’ve worked across coaching, health and wellbeing, education, e-commerce, recruitment, creative industries, consultancy and more.

Different industries, different audiences, different ways of running a business.

But one thing I’ve learnt is that there’s no single right way to do things.

What works brilliantly for one business can be a complete waste of time and money for another.

That’s why I love getting behind the scenes, figuring out what’s working, what’s not, and helping business owners actually put things into practice.

I’d particularly love to work with more coaches, consultants, course creators, educators and service-based businesses who are ready to get more from their marketing.

So if that’s you, slide into my DM’s 👋

Meta is about to make some of your ad campaigns look better 👀

From 12th November, it’s rolling out a new feature designed to recover conversions that currently go unreported.

Good news for small businesses? Potentially.

But there are two things I’d be keeping an eye on.

More conversions showing in Ads Manager doesn’t automatically mean more money in your bank account.

There are still questions about how this new tracking works alongside customer privacy choices.

And if you’ve already got the Meta Pixel on your website, this could affect you even if you’re not currently running ads.

My advice? Check your tracking, understand what your numbers actually mean, and don’t let prettier reports distract you from the real goal: sales.

A lot of advice talks about is posting up to 20 trial reels a day to grow your Instagram.

And yes, people are gaining hundreds, even thousands of followers.

But here’s what I’d question...

Are you attracting potential customers, or just people who liked one random reel?

Let’s say you’re a service provider.

You post a quote b-roll. It goes viral, and suddenly you’ve gained 1,000 followers.

Amazing, right?

Except those people followed most likely because they found your reel funny. They might have absolutely no interest in your services.

So when you start posting your actual work, they scroll straight past (which then effects your engagement rate on your actual content).

And you’ve spent all that effort growing an audience that may never become customers.

Here’s what I’d do instead:

✅ Look at your top-performing Trial Reels. Which topics are bringing in followers? Are they relevant to the people you want to attract?

✅ Check what happens next. Are those Reels leading to relevant profile visits, website clicks, enquiries or sales?

✅ Test content that attracts buyers. If you’re a photographer, try “3 photos every service business needs on its website” rather than another generic motivational quote.

Compare the results. A Reel that brings in 20 relevant followers and 2 enquiries might be far more valuable than one that brings in 1,000 followers and no business opportunities.

I’m not against Trial Reels. They’re a great opportunity to test content with new audiences.

But I am against blindly copying a growth strategy without questioning whether it supports your actual business goals (and growing your instagram shouldn’t be a business goal in itself).

I want to help you turn all that marketing effort
I want to help you turn all that marketing effort into ACTUAL sales.

What’s in it for me? £500. And I get to do my favourite thing - figure out why your marketing isn’t getting the results it should, and how to fix it.

What’s in it for you? A clear plan, less guesswork, and someone who can actually build the things you need.

This is for you if you...

☹︎ Are doing ALL the marketing things but aren’t seeing the sales to match.

☹︎ Have a website/content/emails/funnels, but aren’t convinced they’re working together. (you don’t have to have all of these things, or even any - we can start from scratch!)

☹︎ Keep wondering whether you need to change your offer, redo your website or just post more.

☹︎ Want someone to look at the bigger picture and tell you what they’d do differently.

☹︎ Would quite happily never touch another email automation or landing page again.

I offer both strategy (MAP) and implementation (MAP IT), so whether you need help figuring out what to do or someone to actually do it, I’m your person.

And no, I’m not going to tell you to start a podcast or post three times a day unless there’s a very good reason. 😅

Sound like the kind of help you need?

“But it’s FREE. Why wouldn’t someone want it?”

You’ve spent hours putting together something genuinely useful, you’re giving it away for nothing, and you’re convinced it could help people.

Your audience doesn’t know what you know.

They don’t necessarily understand why they need it. And they might not even be at the stage where the problem you’re solving is on their radar.

This is where a lot of freebie strategies go wrong.

We start with “What could I give away?” rather than “What does my ideal customer actually need help with right now?”

Those are two very different questions.

Your freebie just needs to solve a problem that’s relevant to them, at the point they’re at.

And ideally, that problem should have a natural connection to the paid offer you eventually want them to buy.

Want to work out what that could look like for your business?

I’ve put together a ChatGPT prompt that’ll help you work backwards from your paid offer, question your assumptions about your audience and come up with freebie ideas that actually make sense for their buying journey.

We talk a lot about top of funnel and bottom of funnel as if there always needs to be a long journey between the two.

But sometimes there doesn’t.

I’ve bought low-cost digital products from people I’d only just discovered on Instagram.

Technically, I was top of funnel.

I’d never heard of them before.

But one post showed me they understood the problem I had, a quick look through their feed gave me enough confidence in their expertise, and the product felt like a low risk solution.

Within a few minutes, I’d gone from discovering them to buying.
That’s a very short journey from TOF to BOF.

And it’s why I’m wary of blanket marketing advice.

Sometimes your content can create enough understanding and trust for the buying decision someone is making right now.

A £17 digital product and a £5,000 service are not the same decision.

They carry different levels of risk, consideration and commitment.

So the journey shouldn’t automatically look the same either.

The better question is:

What does someone need to see, know or understand before they feel comfortable taking the next step?

Start there.

Not sure whether your customer journey needs a funnel, nurture sequence or something much simpler? Drop me a DM :)
